The Bill episode 690 - 'Old Habits' This episode caused some confusion on Digital Spy and The Bill forums, after the episode synopsis on DS and in some TV magazines differed from the original synopsis put out by ITV. The DS soaps editor, Kris Green, confirmed that the episode had been re-edited - but there's speculation that parts of it were reshot altogether and that the whole thing was cut down from two episodes into one. If you compare the first synopsis (which I posted here upthread) or even the trailers for the episode to the one that aired, it's pretty obvious that lots of it did, for some reason, end up on the cutting room floor. It ended up as a fairly mundane, run of the mill episode of The Bill, with nothing really to distinguish it except the brief return and exit of regular character Diane Noble. Laura Pyper's part definitely suffered for the cuts - the stabbing scene (which they even released a picture of here), that was presumably going to be the cliffhanger ending to her first episode, disappeared; and after a handful of heavy-on-the-exposition scenes, so did her character. Shame, because she was as good as always as the troubled Sarah, the recovering addict cut off from her family who blames her father for putting her under too much pressure to succeed. I'd like to have seen some sort of confrontation between Sarah and her father; not only to flesh out her character but to make his later suicide bid come a bit less out of the blue. I'd be surprised if Laura turned up again as Sarah, if the speculation about the episode being heavily edited is right. But it was still good, as always, to see her on screen again. I got a bit of a kick out of the fact she was in an episode with PC Leon Taylor, even though they never shared a scene - and as for the cropped haircut, I thought it really suited her.

I taped the episode and didn't get around to watching it until this morning. It's been widely reported in the press that due to ITV's financial problems, The Bill is being cut back from two episodes a week to just one. I don't know how far in advance the show is filmed, so when the storyline deviated from the pre-broadcast synopsis, I just assumed that the show's producers had decided to concentrate on self-contained episodes instead of continuing storylines due to the scheduling changes, and a planned two-parter had been rewritten during pre-production, with the original synopsis being posted on-line in error. It's therefore quite a surprise to learn that the second intended episode appears to have been filmed in it's entirety and then shelved (outstanding research, orokiah). With it's current money troubles, that's exactly the kind of wastage and expenditure that ITV can ill afford. I wonder what caused such a drastic decision?
Good work by Laura though, even though her part was reduced to just two scenes. She was reliable as ever: nervous and looking out at the world through eyes resembling a rabbit's caught in headlights.

It's a mystery: ITV1 obviously have no problems with running a two-parter over two separate weeks - one starts tonight - so if it's true that there was originally a second part to 'Old Habits' there must be some other reason behind them shelving it. Who knows what that might be. It's just a shame that Laura's part seems to have been affected by it.

Laura has made a TV appearance that slipped past us. She was in Vidiotic, a thirty minute pilot for a comedy sketch show that was shown on BBC Three in mid-March, hidden away in the early hours of the morning. Have to confess I'd never heard of it, until it appeared on Laura's IMDB page this week. Here's a trailer for the pilot that I've found, which contains a brief glimpse of the lovely Miss Pyper; www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyWFDbm9mv4

Laura Pyper in something not grim and miserable shocker! Thanks for the info, fenris. Shame we missed it - perhaps it'll get a repeat at some point.

Gosh, I'm away for a while, and suddenly there's all this Laura news! Many thanks for all the updates on what Laura's up to... I'll definitely be making the trip to London to see "Troilus and Cressida" over the summer - not a Shakespeare play I've ever seen, so it'll all be fresh and new!
I have to admit I also missed out on the "Vidiotic" pilot... but now, thanks to your tip off, it's currently downloading on my computer, so I'll be in a position hopefully to post a summary and screencaps within a few days.
Speaking of which, I've made some much delayed updates to the website, including a summary and screencaps for "The Bill - Old Habits". I must try and get things done more speedily next time, before everything builds up!
Particularly as it seems that 2009 is going to be Laura's renaissance year!

Many thanks again fenris for alerting me to this! You're welcome rob. Your site's looking great, as always. Also good to hear about Laura appearing as Cressida at the Globe (thanks for the info, orokiah). I'd love to go and watch her perform, but it might prove difficult. We'll see.

Thanks for the Vidiotic caps and info, Rob. Your site is a great resource for Laura fans - I hope the news of her role in Emma has led lots of Janeites and other interested people to seek it out and find out more about her. And on that theme... a poster at the Republic of Pemberley has previously posted some on set photographs taken during the filming of Emma in Kent, and he's now compiled them into a musical montage on YouTube. We get what I think is the first glimpse of Laura as Jane Fairfax about 3.16 into it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=CF_cOGGM7QI

If you want to try to catch Laura's blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance in Reign of Fire, the movie is being shown on BBC1 this coming Saturday (13/06/09) at 22:35.

Laura Pyper is guest starring in Doctors again in an episode called 'Dummy', which airs on BBC1 at 1.45pm on Thursday 9th July. She plays Ursula Lenton. There's a synopsis of the episode up at DS - be warned, it contains huge spoilers about the plot and her character in particular: www.digitalspy.co.uk/soaps/a160009/dummy.html
