I'll post my thoughts about Roxy soon. Roxy. After having her appear in most of the early episodes as a kind of Greek chorus, trying and failing to act as the voice of Malachi's conscience, I deliberately let Roxy vanish for several instalments. This was because I wanted to divert the reader from suspecting that she was Thelma's contact within the New Church, and instead make Alex appear to be the likely source. The best way I could think of to achieve this was by simply pushing Roxy firmly into the background, while emphasising Alex's snooping around (of course, it's eventually revealed that Alex is keeping an eye on Jo because she doesn't trust her).
Regarding Roxy's return in recent episodes, I originally never intended for there to be any potential romance between her and Thelma. However, I gradually realised that as my planned storyline involved these two very attractive ghosts meeting up and spending time together, it was just too good an opportunity to pass up (I'd also read some insightful femslash fiction pairing Thelma and Roxy, which made me open to the possibility of convincingly portraying them as a couple). Plus it allowed me to address an aspect of Roxy's character that bothered me slightly: I've always thought that her transformation from two-dimensional bitch to born-again saint during Hex's second season was somewhat abrupt. True, believing that you're directly responsible for someone killing themselves is bound to have an effect on you, but I thought it would make more sense if I retrospectively revealed that Roxy's initial bitchiness had partly been a front, explained the reasons for her behaviour, and showed that there'd already been an inkling of a good person within her, prior to Jez's death. This is a theme I'll be exploring further in Episode #14.
