This bit is especially interesting.
Elsewhere faeries are believed to be fallen angels; or the heathen dead, not good enough for Heaven, but not evil enough to find a place in Hell-compelled to live forever'in between' in the twilight regions, the Middle Kingdom. In Devon for instance pixies are considered to be the souls of unbaptised children. However, these beliefs stem only from the advent of Christianity, baptism being unknown prior to that time, and hence cannot be considered reliable. Faerie is very ancient and predated Christianity by several millenia. Moreover it exists, and has existed, in varying forms, in many countries all over the world.
This is also interesting in light of the show:
St. John's Wort is even more efficacious against spells for it provides actual protection from faeries. The St. John's Wort, being a sun symbol like the daisy, was used extensively in midsummer pagan festivals, and is both a powerful protection and a healing plant
I also discovered that Perie is the Persian name for a fairy, hence the nurse is called Nurse Perie not Perry.
Peries were changelings whos were at war against the Deevs (basically demons. The Perie's represented the forces of light and the Deevs darkness, but they're basically balancing forces from what I can discern. The Peries lived in the province of Pleasure and Delight (Shad-u-kam)
They are sometimes described as being made from fire and the aurora boralis was supposed to come from Peries dancing in the night.
This is so interesting. I like it when shows actually do research, and I really should have known it was Persian (my dads is from that area) whoops. I always wondered why they brought in the faerie stuff, I cringed a little initially but now it makes a little more sense -- especially in the light of this idea that faeries can be seen as stuck in a kind of limbo between heaven and hell.
