*** Waking bolt upright in a dark, cold, empty room that once held fond memories of her and Cassie, Thelma began to cry. She remembered vividly the attendants pulling her away from Cassie, all the while telling her that it was for her own good. Telling her not to come back... Thelma hugged herself tightly. She needed to pull herself together - for Cassie's sake. Looking over at the clock, the time was 3;06am. That time meant so much... Dressing quickly, Thelma made her way to the door of her room. She knew exactly what to do...
***
"Cassie?" Thelma spoke softly to her friend, as she gently ran her fingers through rogue strands of long blonde hair. She looked around, worried that an attendant would be back at any minute. Then again, it was the institutes lack of care that caused all this in the first place... "Thelma... what are you doing here?... I thought..." Cassie looked up, a worried expression on her face, squeezing Thelma's hand tightly.
Thelma opened her mouth to speak, but then decided not to. What use would explaining be? She would never let Cassie be taken away from her, and that was all Cassie needed to know right now. "I'm never going to let you go, Cassandra Hughes. I want you to know that. I'll never let go." She said, holding back tears. Though Cassie did not know what Thelma truly meant by these heartfelt words, she replied. "Me neither."
Cassie outstretched two now much stronger arms to embrace Thelma, and they kissed tentatively. Cassie could hear Thelma's muffled sobs as her spiky-haired lover tried to bury herself in Cassie's chest, the tears soaking the thin material of Cassie's hospital gown. She didn't understand what was happening - why had Thelma broken down like this? Just when they had been reunited...
"I feel so guilty, Cass. This is all my fault. But I'm going to fix it. I meant that, when I said I was never going to let you go... I truly did."

She didnt like it here. She mostly spent her days sitting in her room, all alone. Occasionly psychiatrists would come in and speak to her. She'd had to have a few checkups at the hospital. She was taken there by a team of staff, in case she tried to escape. Like she could. She'd never make a full recovery from her accident. She could barely remember life before she woke up in that hospital bed. She had the same dream almost everynight. Her and Thelma were standing by the lake, kissing. It always ended when a dark girl walked past, Cassie didnt know who she was. Thelma wasnt alowed to come and see her, after what had happened before. She'd made a few visits through the night, but it was very hard for her to get in. Other than them visits, she was completely alone. Isolated. It was midnight now, and cassie was curled up in the middle of her bed, tears streaming down her cheeks. She was constantly crying nowadays. Suddenly an agonizing pain shot across her head, which she took into her hands. Pain like this had become normal now, but that didnt make it hurt any less. She squeezed her eyes shut tightly, biting down on the covers to stop herself from screaming....
********************************************
Thelma pulled the suitcase out from under her bed. She'd made sure she'd only packed what was necassery, so it was small. With a resolved sigh she cast one last look around the room...it held so many memorys...

Cassie woke suddenly. SHe sat up and looked around the room to see Thelma packing up her stuff. Thelma looked over and whispered after a faint kiss. "It's ok now, we are going to be together. And no-one and i mean NO-ONE will stop us this time. Get some more sleep i'll wake you when it's time to get ready to go."

Cassie frowned and began to speak but was silenced by Thelma's finger gently pushed against her lips..
"It's ok sweetie go to sleep, everything will be ok in the morning. I promise you.."
Cassie smiled laying back on the bed, she watched Thelma packing her things, happiness poured over her as she felt her eyes slowly close...

"Rise and Shine deary, it's gone 9 o' clock"
Cassie's eyes flickered open in confusion, the nurse's voice shrill and painful to her ears. Sitting up she rubbed her eyes, where was Thelma? She looked across at the woman opening the pathetic plastic excuse for curtains Cassie had...why open them, just meant you could see the bars more clearly Cassie thought bitterly. She felt herself begin to cry..
"Now now missy we'll have none of that, look at the beautiful sunshine outside, maybe we can take you out for a bit later.."
"Shut up!" Cassie snapped at the woman, shocking herself almost as much...
"Just Shut...up" Cassie repeated quitely, looking up at the woman she could see she had scared her. The colour had disappeared from her plump cheeks and her legs were shaking in her white plimpsoles..unsure of what to do the woman took a deep breath and straightened her uniform..
"All right then missy..I shall leave you to it" She said slowly before quickly shuffling out of the room. Cassie watched her leave, a single tear escaping as she did..
It was all a dream..Thelma hadn't come to rescue her..burying her head in the rough hospital pillow, Cassie curled herself into a ball and sobbed.

Medenham Hall - 1am
Stretching her head around the side of the door, Thelma checked the coast was clear before tiptoeing quickly down the stairs. A small red suitcase clutched tightly against her chest. She reached the doors to the hall, looking around once again she grasped the handle tightly. The cold metal designs of the handle leaving imprints in her hand..she turned it forcefully. A faint creak emerged making Thelma's heartbeat race..

She spun around, staring into the darkness. Nothing. Her nerves were getting the better of her. With a heavy sigh she took one last look around Medenham Hall. This place had been her home for the last six years, and now she was leaving. She'd never see it again. A tear ran slowly down her cheek as she thought of all the memorys she was leaving behind. "We'll make new ones though...better ones" She whispered to herself, closing the heavy front door one final time.
*** Another long, lonely day had passed. Nobody had set foot in the room after the nurse, not even a psychiatrist. Cassie had made her decision. Thelma had promised her she'd never let go, but it seemed she'd totally forgotten Cassie, so now she was on her own. All alone. Why stay? Brushing the tears away from her eyes, she walked over to the window to stare out into the grounds. Her hands curled around the bars as she peered blindly into the darkness, looking for something, anything. Nothing was there though. Nothing was ever there... Feeling her dispair rising like bile in her throat, she flattened herself down on the cold floor next to her bed, and reached under it. After a few minutes she withdrew an object, which glinted in the solitary ray of moonlight pouring in through the bars. A knife. She stood up, and sat on the edge of her bed. Thelma's face flashed before her eyes as she rested its sharp tip on one of her wrists. Breathing deeply, she said three words. "I love you..."

Cassie pressed the cold metal against her flesh, tears streaming down her face as her hands shook. She looked up at the door one last time, begging Thelma to come running through to rescue her..
***
Thelma's feet felt the ground change from concrete to grass, the grass was wet making it difficult to run. Her breathe visible on the cold night air as she ran towards the institution...not too far now...
***
Cassie pushed the blade toward the vein, the blue lines pulsating under the pressure, the moonlight danced off the blade as she pulled the knife across her wrist, cutting deeply...
***
Thelma stopped, dropping the suitcase, clutching her side she looked up, she could see the institution from where she stood, two or three lights glowed from barred windows. Straightening up she took a deep breath and jogged toward the building..
***
The blood ran down Cassie's left wrist, dripping onto her white gown and creating a dark pool on the floor beneathe her. She stared at her wrist, her heart breaking as she watched the dark shape creep across the floor, she transferred the knife to her right wrist..
***
Thelma could see the gates, she was close enough now-it wouldn't be long before she had Cassie in her arms again, she slowed her jog to a walk..
***
Cassie pulled the knife quickly eager to ease the pain, the lonliness she felt escaping through her wounds..
***
Thelma's feet landed on the pavement but her legs buckled beneath her and she crumpled to the ground grazing her knee. She had managed to scale the gate though and she was even closer to Cassie now, she creeped toward the door...
***
Cassie dropped the knife onto the cold floor the moons reflection casting the only light into the dank room, she whispered Thelma's name as she leant back against the radiator closing her eyes..
***
Thelma had creeped past the night watchman and stood at Cassie's door, one last look over her shoulder and she clutched the door handle. Taking a breath and smiling she opened the door...

Her eyes travelled across the room and came to rest on Cassie, who lay in a crumpled heap on the floor. Thelma slowly walked over to her. Why was she on the floor? As she neared her she stumbled on something wet, regaining her balance she turned her gaze onto the rapidly increasing liquid that was surounding her friend. "Oh god" She whispered, crouching down and turning her over. Cassie's face was paper white, and her eyelids and mouth slowly trembled. Panic and fear gripping her whole body, Thelma stared down at the long welds running down her arms. She quickly grabbed the white sheet from Cassie's bed, and wrapped it tightly around both wrists, all the while silently praying. Sobs racked her body as she groped around for the panic button that she knew was near Cassie's bed, but she couldnt find it anywhere. She ran to the door, tears streaming down her cheeks. "HELP!" She screamed, before turning back to Cassie and gathering her in her arms, smothering her face with kisses. A few seconds later a team of attendants ran into the room. The next few minutes passed in a whirl of confusion, with them trying to pull her off the blonde. "I'll never let go!" She screamed, as a strong paramedic wrenched her free, "I told her I'd never let go! Please!" She collapsed into a ball, feeling her heart breaking into a thousand pieces as the team desperatly tried to pump some life back into Cassie. A female paramedic shook her head, and made some signal to the rest of the team, who imediatly began taking away all the equipment attached to the still girl. "She's gone- Time of death-" "NOOO!" Thelma screamed, throwing herself onto Cassie. She wrapped her arms tightly around her, gently rocking her back and forth. "Dont leave me Cass...please..."
***
It was all over. Today was the day they were putting Cassie into the ground. Thelma didnt hear any of the priests words as they all stood around the grave. She didnt cry. She'd already cried her heart dry. She just stared blankly at the wooden coffin. Cassie wasnt in that box, she thought bitterly. After the service everybody left apart from her. They were all going back to the school, to have some kind of party afterwards. She wouldnt go. They all pretended they were genuinly upset about it, that the party was in Cassie's memory, but Thelma knew the real reason was so they could all get drunk. "I love you, Cassie Hughes. We'll see each other soon" She whispered after a few silent hours, standing up. She knew where she was going. Going back to where it had all began... As she sat by the lake, she remembered there first confrontation here, the way they had kissed...ghosts of Cassie seemed to flit her, giggling in that special way that would always put a smile on Thelmas face. Then she remembered the way Cassie had wanted them both to end it all there. "It will all be over in a few seconds..." A voice whispered as Thelma lowered herself into the water, "Drowning is a very quick way to die..."
