While religious leaders want to establish the kingdom of heaven on Earth, the heroes of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy (The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass) seek to overthrow the oppressive “kingdom” of heaven and establish a “republic” in its stead. This is the driving action in Pullman’s “young adult” fantasy series. And although the books are marketed to teens, the stories will, like all good literature, reward readers with more years and a few gray hairs as well.

The City of Magpies: Season 2 opener. Fascinating on being informed about multiple Oxfords and how they are different. Harrowing on war being prepared. Quite a vision that Will has and the attack made on him.

The Cave: Season 2, Episode 2. The Cave is what Lyra understand as a computer. Fascinating when Lyra meets Mary Malone, a physicist at Oxford and what Lyra understand as Dust is dark matter. Mary sure is enthralled by this meeting with Lyra and hoping she can learn more from her. Intriguing at the same time the Magisterium declares war on the witches, and starts bombing witch territories.

Theft: Season 2, Episode 3. The theft is what Boreal stole from Lyra culminating in a deal that Lyra is forced to accept from him. Remarkable the episode title is about that one little bit that led to that deal at the end.

The Scholar: Antepenultimate episode of season 2 What a climax when Lyra and Will’s encounter with Lyra’s mother Mrs Coulter and Boreal and what a moment when Lyra angrily denies to her mother that they are anything alike. Intriguing that this ends with Mary steps through the window to Cittàgazze.

Æsahættr: Season 2 finale. Pretty enjoyable including Mrs Coulter getting Lyra back. Surprised there is a post-credit scene with Roger calling for Lyra and Lyra asking what is this place.

The Enchanted Sleeper: Season 3 opener. Not bad opener to this the third and final season and quite harrowing seeing Lyra being in a drugged state.
This episode is dedicated to the memory of Helen McCrory who had voiced Stelmaria in the previous two seasons and had passed on April 16 2021.

The Break: Season 3, Episode 2. Quite a tense situation when Will and Lyra had to get away from Mrs Coulter and surprising how that was resolved.
