Anatole Taubman Is Bond 22's Henchman Swiss actor confirms role in upcoming 007 filmSwiss actor Anatole Taubman has been cast as henchman in the yet untitled 22nd James Bond film. Taubman announced this today in Swiss TV show glanz & gloria on SF1: ‘James Bond - that’s like playing the Champions League. For a European actor, this is like a gold ticket. There’s nothing better. I’m very happy.’ He’s also looking forward to working with Marc Forster. ‘We got along very well during the casting and we have a lot in common.’ Taubman is not allowed to tell any specific details on his role as he was sworn to secrecy, but he confirmed that he has a personal trainer as the role is physically demanding. Reports indicate that it’s an important role with lots of action and dialogue scenes. Shooting for Taubman is reported to go from January until June at various locations. Taubman was born in Zürich in 1971 from an Austrian mother and an East German father. He grew up in England and Switzerland and moved to New York at the age of 21 to study at the Circle in the Square Theatre School. He then returned to Europe where he played a number of roles in Swiss and German TV series and movies. He also played in a number of international productions, such as the 2008 release Taken starring Liam Neeson and Famke Jansen, Æon Flux (2005) and the mini series P.O.W. and Band of Brothers (both 2001). Taubman currently lives in Berlin with his girlfriend, with whom he has two daughters. With the recent confirmation of Mathieu Amalric as the the villain last week and now this announcement, it looks like the casting of Bond 22 baddies is coming together. Further Bond 22 casting news: Olga Kurylenko, who most recently starred in the movie Hitman, will be the principal Bond girl in the upcoming (and still untitled) film. She's playing a character called Camille. Here's a link to the info; news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7176310.stmAnd the traditional role of 'secondary' Bond girl (well, you don't expect James to get by with just one sexual conquest, do you?) has gone to St Trinians actress Gemma Arterton. She's reportedly playing a MI6 agent named Fields. Here's the link; news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7174490.stm

I thought Casino Royale was a brave film, in that it took the Bond series in a whole new direction, clearly influenced by the success of the Bourne movies (which themselves reclaimed the action genre from the excesses of the Eighties & Nineties, and hearkened back to the dour, story-heavy thrillers of the Seventies). It was far from being a 'traditional Bond movie' and could easily have backfired and alienated audiences. However, I also thought that the film that followed Casino Royale would be the really interesting one: would the Bond producers build upon the groundwork laid by Daniel Craig's debut, or would they revert back to the relative safety of the tried-and-tested Bond formula?
Well, I saw Quantum of Solace today and my reaction is - Wow. It's now clear that Casino Royale was a transitional movie, carefully containing just enough of the traditional 007 elements to guide us by the hand into the whole new realm of 21st century Bond. Quantum of Solace is the finished, completed article. Forget all the films before Casino Royale, they happened in a different world - a different universe - to the one inhabited by Craig's Bond. He operates in a recognizable, believable world of real-life politic, where the CIA are happy to do business with brutal dictators (and even rub out interfering MI6 agents to cement the arrangement) and large corporations routinely destabilize governments in order to obtain oil rights. In short, it's the world outside your window. It makes you realise just how much the previous Bond movies - where the American Intelligence services were portrayed as ever-dependable friends and allies - really were set in a fantasyland. The villains in Quantum of Solace aren't interested in global domination, because they've already achieved it in every way that matters. Instead, they're just obscenely rich & powerful men and women who want to get richer still. Remind you of anyone?

There's an interview with Anatole Taubman here discussing his role in Quantum of Solace. I saw Quantum of Solace today and my reaction is - Wow. I'm with you on that. I thought it was stunning, although I could have done with a rewatch of Casino Royale beforehand to make it easier to remember who was who and what was what. Loved the [very minor spoilers] scene set to Tosca, M getting an arc of her own, and the more Bourne than Bourne action sequences - although they were edited so frenetically it was sometimes hard to tell what was going on. It wasn't nearly as grim as it was reported, either - some parts were very funny, especially Bond booking into a swanky hotel: "We're teachers on sabbatical. We won the lottery." The reviews I've read really didn't do it justice.

Quantum of Solace is being shown on ITV1 next Monday (04/06/12) at 21:00.
Best enjoy it while you can. The decades-long agreement between ITV and 007's home studio/production company United Artists is shortly coming to an end, and Sky (their incredibly deep pockets bulging with Premier League subscription payers' dosh) have nabbed exclusive screening rights for the entire Bond series.

For the last several weeks, the ITV channels have been saturation-bombing their schedules with Bond movies, ensuring that they pack in as many screenings as humanly possible before the broadcasting rights for the entire franchise transfer to Sky in October. Quantum of Solace is being shown on ITV1 at 22:35 on Friday 28th September 2012.
