Obviously a fictional series can bend and twist history to its hearts content to make something fit a story. And we all know that Azazeal, although based on a "real" religious figure, isn't actually based 100% on fact. However, the real Azazel wasn't the leader of the Nephilim. He was a leader, but he was one of the Fallen Angels who "fell to Earth" and mated with Mortal Women. The Nephilim were the offspring of the Angels and the Women. They were believed to be births of untimely miscarraige or abortion. The Nephilim were half-breed Human/Angel species who were known as "giants" as they were so tall and strong. Dave Tyrel stated that the Nephilim's end came when God, "not at his most merciful, cast them into the abyss where they have remained ever since". This is not true. Azazel, as punishment for teaching men how to make weapons and teaching women magic and vanity - all secrets that man and woman was not meant to know, was sent into the desert, (a place called Dudael) where he is to remain until his judgement. The Nephelim, however, destroyed one another when the Arch Angel Gabriel was sent to start a civil war amongst them by God. Azazel also appears in Islamic mythology (as Djin) who refused to worship Adam and lusted after Mortal Women. The Nephilim are written in the Jewish Dead Sea Scrolls as "Giants". They also feature in The Book of Enoch and the Fallen Angels briefly appear in The Bible. "It's always nice to get positive press"

Azazyl was the leader of a group of fallen angel's named as 'the watchers'. They came to earth and 'mated' with mortal women as Kneetroll said and the women consequently gave birth to children known as the 'giants', The angels also instructed man in the art of war and women in the art of make-up etc. (acc the book of enoch and other such malarkey) I know other stuff too but gonna consult me books before I put another post
