Okay so I've missed the last two weeks of Doctor Who, managed to catch it tonight, all excited and this was what I get?! Rubbish! Peter Kay was more 'fat bastard' from Austin Powers than scary alien absorbathon and the Doctor was in it for what 15 minutes?? Also the (paraphrasing) 'we have somewhat of a love life' at the end - she's just a face on a paving slab, hmmm I wonder what their love life consists of?!! I did feel for Jackie though, worrying about Rose and vowing to protect her and the Doctor. I miss Mickey!! Did anyone else hear (sorry if this was covered last fortnight) <highlight possible spoiler> that Piper is leaving the series? news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/5082668.stm?ls

I thought Marc Warren made the best of a bad job, he was really sweet and his and Jackie's bits were nice and I liked the stuff about the meetings, but the rest was not doing it for me oh and what, another Torchwood name drop? I know it makes sense that people obsessed with the doctor would know it existed but I'd almost rather they made more of it than drop it in to a sentence every week! I thought Absorbaloth was a crap monster and really just an excuse to have Peter Kaye do 'funny northerner' schtick.

Hmm...I think that this episode actually has gone and done what Hex's season never did in that it thematically linked many of the things that the season has explored from a different perspective. Sure there was some silly moments - considering the fact that the monster was the winner of Blue Peter's 'Design a Monster' competition - which means that the number of younger children watching would probably increase. The comedy was aimed purely for the younger audience because it still is a family show.
But what I found fascinating about this episode was the dark underlying theme that has been generated throughout the season of how The Doctor seems to have a strange tendency to 'destroy' the lives of those that are 'touched' by him or at least end up being the cause of something major in people's lives - even if they only did see him briefly. Elton's life seemed to be affected completely by The Doctor and he lost his mother...and his girlfriend is a paving slab. While there's 'some' happiness - it's always small happiness to try and compensate for the situation. Sarah-Jane: was left on her own but did have K-9 for company. Jackie: Left on her own but she knows that she will protect her daughter. Mickey: Found his calling and his name but has to be known as Ricky and could die at any moment.
It begins to shed light on the not-as-subtle-as-RTD-wants-you-to-think Rose/Doctor scenes tied into the beginning of the series and linked with that prophecy of Rose's death all seems to begin to show that The Doctor has had a bigger role in things and the series than it previously has been thought.
All in all - I liked the episode. It gave a new perspective on The Doctor and it helped me to understand more clearly the theme of this current series.

That I did like! Elton's little speech at the end about how long Jackie and Rose had left was very poignant, because, as you say matt the Doctor does seem to leave a trail of pain and/or destruction in his wake.
I loved the ELO references though, can't beat a bit of Mr Blue Sky hehe

Well that was crap.
That said - next week's first part of the season finale looks excellent. A decent look at Torchwood at last...perhaps we'll see the Face of Boe again.

I read rose was gonna die three week ago I love rose She is really cool Another great duo is her and the doctor. I don't think it will be the same People could say the same about the doctor, but the doctor always seems to change face Hopefully, im my opinion, david will be sticking around for another two seasons. It must be stressful working on that show. Takes over eight months just to do 13 episodes. i bet it only took hex like 4 months to film season 2.

Regarding 'Army of Ghosts', I have to confess my reaction upon seeing the final scene was "Daleks... again?!"
Wasn't the entire Earth being invaded by millions of Cybermen enough of a cliffhanger? And hadn't Russell T. Davies repeatedly stated that the Cybermen were going to be the main villains this season, and the Daleks wouldn't be appearing?
Now I understand and applaud the need to surprise the audience, especially in these spoiler-driven times (full marks on that score, by the way), but hasn't Davies just taken the Cybermen - the second most iconic aliens in the show's history - and effectively undermined and weakened them in what was supposed to be their epic season-ending story by making them play second fiddle to the Daleks?
Of course, the real reason the pepperpots have been brought back is financial necessity. In original Who, new alien races debuted in nearly every story because they were made out of sticky-back plastic, empty washing up bottles and various other odds and ends. The problem now is that modern audiences expect movie-standard special effects, and all of new Who's costumes and props are so expensive they've got to be reused. That's the reason why we had a Slitheen encore in 'Boom Town' last season, and why the Face of Boe keeps making cameo appearances (complete with subplot - his final message to the Doctor - to ensure others). Therefore, I'll be very surprised if both the Cybermen and the Daleks don't turn up at least once in the third season.
Also, as Who is now very American in format, for commercial reasons (13 episodes - the length of a shortened U.S. season - each 45 minutes in duration), does anyone else think that season finale 'Doomsday' might end with another cliffhanger, to be resolved next year?
