Righty. Copyright laws on songs/films/tv-shows state rather clearly that any copying/lending/hiring/selling/etc without written permission from those who own the legal rights to it can result in fines and/or imprisonment for fraud and theft. Therefore, downloading songs/films/etc is illegal, as you're not purchasing these items - no royalty money is going to those who should be getting it which means stores/publishers/artists/etc are losing money every time someone downloads something. It's quite sad that it all boils down to money, but unfortunately that's the case. Although you may not be distributing these items to other people or selling them, download them is still infringing copyright by not buying it (again the money issue pops up) Lots of people complain that the price of DVD's and CD's and stuff is far too high, which is why they download. However, the more people download, the more the publishers must raise the prices of these things, as they're making major losses in sales. Basically, you can get caught by what I like to call "mystery shoppers" (cops undercover, basically) who take a look into people's shared folder. Let's just say they found Bob, who has just 1 song in his folder. They'll probably let him alone, rendering him harmless. However, let's say Jay has 3Gb worth of songs on his hard drive. Jay is therefore costing the music industry thousands of pounds/dollars/euros. They'll track Jay down through his IP address with ease and nab him for "stealing" music. Hope that explained it, lol

that's why bittorrent is causing the industry to freak out because it's not like peer to peer sharing you don't access peoples folders.

Yup. I think it's a problem that is out of their control, really. No matter what they do to stop it, they can't really. It's like yousendit.com - people fileshare over that, and nobody can stop it because it's basically just an e-mail program.

what really bugs me is that in town there are street vendors merrily selling duplicated DVD's right under the polices noses and they don't do anything about it, in fact I know of one policeman who does it himself.
