sorry if this doesn't go here. Okay, does anyone have a forum of thier own? I want to make a forum for hex and want to know which one would be the best choice for a forum server.
I would prefer it if it weren't over 50 pounds (pound sign not working) vBulletin is excellent quality, but looks very confusing. Invision Power Board is also quite nice, and phpbb looks okay and very simple to use and very cheap.
I just want to know what you think would be the best forum server in your opinion?

I use the invision free boards, to be honest, if I were you I'd stick with that until you know how much traffic you're getting, it seems a bit of a waste to spend money if you're not generating masses of traffic. That's not me being a doom merchant by the way I just mean better to wait before jumping in. Also this topic SHOULD be okay on here. It might get moved to the spam section but as you don't have a link up on here you might be okay. I don't have mod right for this section of the board so....we'll see.

Yeah, I used alot of those invisionfree forums, they never done well though. It may be simply because it's invisionfree or that I'm a rubbish forum maker. I don't know. But either way, if the HEX forum does not do so well...couldn't I just close it down and change it into a forum for one of my other obsessions (which we shall not go into ) Has anyone got any experience on here with using this stuff? I mean it though I really want a forum but I'm just soo confused at the moment.

Okay from someone who's made so many forums it's unbelievable:
If you have to spend money, the best bet would be to buy some web-space, making sure that they are php compatible and do at least one MySQL Database and download free forum software that you can install. This includes phpbb, YaBB and SMF (that my host provides and installs free of charge). Invision Power Board now requires you to pay for the software that you use. Unless you know what you are doing, and are comfortable with forums and how they work.
However, if you don't want to spend money, you can go with free boards. I strongly do not recommend ProBoards. My feelings towards them are clear, limited functionality, strange tendancy to not allow people on the board at busy times.
InvisionFreeBoard is possibly the best board you can get. You get some of the functionality of the main board software (and I do think IPB is the choice for forum software).

I don't really want a free forum, as I want a more proffessional site. I really don't care if it's anything under 50 pounds, just anything over would be a bit too much.
I think i'll go with vbulletin as I know a few internet friends that have a vb forum.
Thanks anyway everyone.
This thread can be closed (if you feel it should of course).

Just about all the professional sites and websites of companies use Vbulletin. Even Microsoft recognise their superiority and pay them instead of making their own system for many of the websites they run.
phpBB and Invision Free boards get hacked on a regular basis, as they are amazingly unsecure.

I've never used vBulletin as an Admin. I do like SMF though, haven't had a problem yet.

I'm actually working on a PhBB board for this place (yes, I caved, I don't like it here no more! Waaah!), but it won't be in use until early 2005 cos I need to continue to customise it!
