Does anyone happen to read SFX and think that it is the greatest mag for Sci-Fi in the WORLD??? Personally I dont know why I gave up my year's subscription last year. Very silly of me!

I've started to read it again - I prefer Dreamwatch but I get both.
For years I read Cult Times, I loved Paul Spragg's humour and the Listings. But he's changed the design and it's lost its charm.

I have a love hate relationship with SFX, they have some great articles and features but they also have this horrible smug boys own gang thing going on too. They're really bad for spoiling shows and films AND they're really good at savaging something or saying it's really naff, then when it turns out to be popular they jump on the bandwagon. I've read so many sporadic DVD reviews where they hated the film at the cinema but suddenly it's become the bee's knees on DVD (and no, not just because of the DVD features.)

I dunno - while it does seem obvious that they do jump on bandwagons, there's a familiar family feel to the magazine that you begin to learn and know some of the people who work on it. It's like when I used to read CVG and Gamesmaster when I was younger - they really let you know who worked on it and they had an open relationship with the readers. I used to read Dreamwatch all the way back in '99-01 before they switched their style into a weirdish one. I bought it again in 2003 and I love this new style that they've kept. It's usually massive switches in look and style that can turn me off a magazine. with CVG it's first switch change when I had it was actually better - but a radical new look really altered the magazine and turned me off. And now the same has happened with Cult Times. Which is a shame as I love Paul Spragg and his opinions on stuff that he writes for other Visual Imagination publications is so consistent.

like I said, it's a mixed bag for me really. Restyles of mags don't bother me as long as the quality is consistant. I just get irritated by the magazine sometimes. I've encountered one or two of the writers in real life and they range from really pleasant to......less than shining personalities shall we say.

I've read so many sporadic DVD reviews where they hated the film at the cinema but suddenly it's become the bee's knees on DVD (and no, not just because of the DVD features.) What annoys me (and what I think they do far more often) is when they do the opposite, namely give a movie a positive review when it's released into cinemas, but if it then tanks at the box office they subsequently give the DVD release a poor, sneering review, conveniently forgetting that they originally liked it.

Have read on another forum that Dreamwatch is ceasing publication, due to falling sales. The final issue goes on sale on 25/01/07.
A real pity. I've been buying Dreamwatch for almost ten years, and while it's gone through several revamps and sometimes struggled to establish it's own identity, it never took the easy way out by adopting the same kind of juvenile, bloke-ish stance favoured by the more popular SFX. And it's news section was usually both more detailed and miles ahead of any other other UK genre magazine.
