I just heard from one of my work colleagues that Steve Irwin died from a Stingray Barb to the heart. I checked and sadly it's true. I can't believe it. That man was and always will be my hero and the entire reason I got into herpetology. I'm genuinely upset about this, I'm quite choked up, he was such a genuine man and this had to happen to him.

I just saw the news online and couldnt believe it! From what it sounded liek it was a pretty fluke accident. Its kinda weird. My dad could be steve irwins twin brother and he also got stung by a sting ray a few years ago. I feel so bad for his wife and kids. I suppose you coudl say at least he was doing what he loved.

You could yes, but I just wish it hadn't happened. Apparently, only 2 other people have ever died from a Stingray "attack" and Steve Irwin was the third.
I've no doubt the animal was scared by Steve diving into the water; he was probably swimming too close, but to have it just happen to go under his ribs and into his heart is terrible; anywhere else and he would be alive. It's a one in a million chance; his heart was a tiny ball of flesh in what was a tall, stocky man and it just happened to hit him there.
He always wanted to retire like his Dad did and have his kids follow in his footsteps. He was always so proud of the fact that he had never been in a serious accident with any animal he'd come into contact with (save for the croc bite he had, but it was only on his hand).
I've got every DVD he ever made and had been watching all his shows for years on end. I was even planning to pop over to Australia Zoo next year while I was in NZ visiting my friend, but it'll be sad going now, cos he won't be there...
I feel so sorry for his wife and kids. Terri Irwin seems like a lovely woman who was madly in love with Steve, even after almost 15 years of marriage. I hope they can all find a way through it. He didn't deserve to die like that.
He'll certainly be remembered by me.

I was really sad when I heard the news this morning. It's always really strange when someone like that dies, it almost doesn't seem real because there's so much footage of them.
