Although it has to be said....worst...closing shot....ever! How naff was that! It was so cheesy! A flowery border around the screen - what the heck were they thinking?! Apart from that, loved it; definitely one of the best adaptations ever. Big gap in my Sunday nights now.

Wide Sargasso Sea. It's based on a 'prequel' novel by Jean Rhys. They were showing it on BBC4 I think...I didn't know they were planning to show it on BB1.

I caught it on BBC4 but I'll probably end up watching it again on Sunday just to cure my Jane Eyre withdrawal. It's pretty good - very atmospheric (the music is fab, it stuck in my head for days) and fairly racy. Rebecca Hall is excellent as the first Mrs R as well: it paints her in a far more sympathetic light than either the novel JE or the TV adaptation.

Wide Sargasso Sea was an excellent novel - very strange, but captivating. I'd be interested to know how well it translates to the screen...

Wide Sargasso Sea was an excellent novel - very strange, but captivating. I'd be interested to know how well it translates to the screen... They skip all the chapters about Bertha/Antoinette's childhood, so a lot of the explanation for her mental fragility isn't really carried through. It does feel a bit disjointed as a result - Rochester's change of heart towards her does seem to come almost out of nowhere. No appearance by her mother either (interestingly, Katrine de Candole aka Perie in Hex is credited as Annette in the TV Times cast list and the series press release, but she didn't appear in the final version, the BBC4 one anyway; maybe she just got left on the cutting room floor). Not sure where you could DL it but there's some clips available if you click down to the Wide Sargasso Sea section of the following: www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour/cinema/

That's the problem with stories where complex situations are the cause of character development over a lifetime - they always wind up having to cut some of the important parts when they turn the story into a movie...
Was this the first time it was aired? Maybe there's a longer version released somewhere?
Thanks for the link!

Oh, true, and then there's the added complication of contending with nitpickers like me who more often than not disagree with them on what the important parts actually are. I thought they got it exactly right in Jane Eyre and Wide Sargasso Sea though. Cutting WSS down to just the bare bones of the Bertha/Rochester relationship makes it very claustrophobic but it also heightens the tension between them, and the tragedy of the way their regard for each other, and their marriage, ends up falling apart. It premiered on BBC4 a couple of weeks ago, and is repeated on BBC1 tomorrow night - same running time, so I guess any bits that were cut will end up on the DVD (if there is one).
