I think The Asylum's best movie so far is Merlin and the War of the Dragons, a first rate sword & sorcery adventure that was directed by Mark Atkins and filmed in Wales. So I'm really looking forward to their upcoming fantasy movie Dragon Crusaders, which is currently in production in Wales with Atkins at the helm. The film's storyline has a band of fugitive Crusaders attacking a pirate ship, finding themselves cursed as a result, and having to defeat a powerful wizard - who can transform himself into a dragon - in order to save themselves. It's taken a while, but according to Amazon, Dragon Crusaders is (finally!) being released on Region 2 DVD on 30th April 2012.

Confirmation of more Asylum Region 2 DVD release dates in the UK;
Snow White (American title Grimm's Snow White). The Asylum cannily cashing-in on not one, but two upcoming studio movies, Mirror Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman: 5th March 2012. Princess of Mars, the Asylum's adaptation of the first John Carter novel, was originally released on DVD in the UK in 2010 under the title Martian Colony Wars. With Disney's epic blockbuster John Carter soon hitting a multi-plex near you, the Asylum's version has been re-titled and is being re-released as John Carter of Mars: 5th March 2012. Battleship (American title American Battleship). The Asylum's take on the forthcoming big budget 'US Navy versus aliens' actioner Battleships: 9th April 2012.

Further proof (courtesy of the Arrow in the Head website) that The Asylum understand their fanbase, and know how to give them what they want; You can't keep a good Mega Shark down, is what I always say... The Asylum has officially greenlit production on MEGA SHARK VS MECHA SHARK, a much anticipated third installment in the “Mega Shark” franchise, following Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus in 2009 and Mega Shark vs Crocosaurus in 2010. The killer (yet tantalizingly mysterious) synopsis: When Mega Shark returns in this all-new feature film, the government releases the top-secret Mecha Shark to defeat the franchise’s popular monster in a fierce battle that threatens the planet. “The fan response to the Mega Shark franchise has been rabid,” said The Asylum partner Paul Bales. “In addition to a very persuasive online petition, we found that Mega Shark has taken on a life of her own. We’ve received photos of Mega Shark cakes, toys and games on a near-daily basis and we thought it was high time she did battle with an iconic Mecha monster.” I'm surprised to learn about the Mega Shark cakes, but the overwhelming love the entire world feels for this cinematic titan is certainly to be expected. And a Mecha Shark in the mix? The possibilities are endless! The Asylum will begin casting on MSVMS later this year. Who can this amazing company dig up this time around?Source

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is released into UK cinemas today (20/06/12), so here's a link to the trailer for The Asylum's mockbuster version - Abraham Lincoln vs Zombies, which looks as though it could be as much fun as it's mega-budgeted studio cousin.

Battleship (American title American Battleship). The Asylum's take on the forthcoming big budget 'US Navy versus aliens' actioner Battleships: 9th April 2012. Are you sitting comfortably? Then we'll begin... The Asylum's mockbuster version of the major studio movie Battleships was originally called American Battleship in the US and was going to be released as Battleship here in the UK. Then the studio movie underwent a title change and became Battleship, whereupon (after the threat of a lawsuit) The Asylum's effort was also re-titled and became American Warships. And breathe... Anyway, American Warships receives it's UK television premiere when it's shown on Syfy next Thursday (09/08/12) at 21:00.

Nazis at the Centre of the Earth has it's UK premiere on the Syfy channel on 10th July 2012. Although it's already been screened several times on the British Syfy channel, Nazis at the Centre of the Earth has bizarrely been retitled Bloodstorm for it's Region 2 DVD release in the UK. It's available from this Monday (06/08/12).

Over the last year or so, The Asylum have started to move away from producing 'mockbusters', but they haven't given up on them entirely. Their next effort? Atlantic Rim! Link to the trailer.

Atlantic Rim was released on Region 2 DVD in the UK at the beginning of last week (24th June 2013). My local Sainsburys is selling it for £3. Probably worth a punt.

Trailer for Mega Shark vs Mecha Shark. Surprised to see this, as The Asylum announced this movie back in March 2012, then everything went quiet, and since the time between the initial announcement and the actual release of their films is normally approximately six-to-eight months (directors who have worked for the company have stated in interviews that the average shooting schedule on an Asylum flick is just two weeks), I'd assumed that this project had either been quietly cancelled or placed on the back-burner. Good to see Debbie Gibson back (though I suspect her role is just a cameo), and I like the tongue-in-cheek reference to the most memorable scene in the original movie.

Part man, part machine, all mockbuster! Android Cop!! The Asylum have also produced Jailbait. As much as I'd like to think that they've decided to tick the few exploitation boxes they'd previously missed, and this is their 'Women in Prison' movie, instead it's clearly just a cash-in on the hit American TV series Orange Is The New Black.

Ever since the first Expendables movie was released, there's been speculation about making an all-female version ( Expendabelles?), which at the time of writing hasn't progressed any further than being in development, possibly going into production next year. Well, since they're currently churning out movies at a rate of approximately one a month, those hard-working folk at The Asylum (' What? Us? Sleep?') have typically already gone and made their version. Cynthia Rothrock (in the Bruce Willis role), Brigitte Nielsen (as the arch-villain), Kristanna Loken, Zoe Bell, Nicole Bilderback (nope, me neither) and Vivica A. Fox are Mercenaries. Here's the trailer.Fingers crossed they bring Francoise Yip, Kelly Hu, Natassia Malthe, Bai Ling, Traci Lords and Sophia Crawford on board for the sequel.
