The Asylum have announced production of Nazi Overlord, their mockbuster take on upcoming studio movie Overlord (which is rumoured to be part of the Cloverfield franchise). Here's the official synopsis: 'A D-Day rescue mission turns deadly when a band of soldiers discovers a group of Nazis creating horrific experiments that will all but ensure Allied defeat if the creations escape.'
Intriguingly, amongst the announced cast is Dominique Swain, who previously starred in the Asylum's Nazis at the Centre of the Earth (2012, trailer below), suggesting a direct link between both films.

Coming soon from The Asylum - Alien Predator! Here's the official synopsis: 'A black ops reconnaissance team is sent to investigate the crash of an unidentified aircraft. When they arrive, they find strange markings and residue visible only in infrared. As the team gets deeper in and tries to figure out the source of the markings, they discover that they are being hunted by an alien expedition to Earth.'
This isn't the first time The Asylum have ventured into Predator territory. They previously produced Alien vs Hunter (2007) and Alien Origin (2012). Here's the trailer for the latter;

Have to confess, this is not a mockbuster I was expecting. It's also hard to judge from the trailer alone exactly what the movie's about - it seems to have an experimental robot running amok ("Hornet's gone rogue!") in the middle of a zombie outbreak, with a UFO thrown in. However, the official synopsis on The Asylum's website makes things a little clearer, and also clarifies that instead of being the primary threat, the big 'bot is actually the film's hero: 'An alien race, intent on decimating mankind and repopulating the Earth, brainwashes humans to carry out acts of destruction. With the military powerless, humanity's only hope lies in an untested, hi-tech mech-bot… but will it be enough?'
This is actually The Asylum's third venture into Transformers territory. Transmorphers (2007) was the mockbuster that arguably first brought the company to wider attention, and was a surprisingly watchable Future War film, but prequel Transmorphers: Fall of Man (2009) proved to be a disappointment.

The next upcoming mockbuster from The Asylum is Monster Island, their take on Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and I have to confess I've got mixed feelings about it. While I'm generally a fan of The Asylum and their output, I've found their previous attempts at giant monster movies - the Mega Shark series and Atlantic Rim - to be quite dull and disappointing (can't comment on Atlantic Rim: Resurrection and Megalodon as I've not seen them). But perhaps Monster island will prove to be an exception.

The next upcoming mockbuster from The Asylum is Monster Island, their take on Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Trailer for Monster Island, with Eric Roberts continuing The Asylum tradition (established by Michael Madsen in Megalodon) of ' Admiral with non-regulation haircut.' Have to say, this doesn't look too bad, though the proof will be in the watching.

Sometimes The Asylum mockbusts two films at once. Sinister Squad (2016) was - of course - primarily their take on Suicide Squad, but by including several characters from Lewis Carroll's 'Wonderland' novels, it also dragged that same year's Alice Through the Looking Glass into the mix. King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table (2017) was a bizarre melding of King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and the Power Rangers reboot movie, with modern-day descendants of Arthur and his knights battling against a Morgana Le Fay who'd been magically exiled into outer space one-and-a-half millennium ago, and had now returned armed with alien technology, having gone the full Rita Repulsa. And now they've produced an opportunistic two-for-one cash-in on both It: Chapter Two and Joker, entitled Clown;
And I'd started to think that The Asylum wasn't going to bother with a superhero/comic book themed movie this year. Their first such effort was Almighty Thor (2012) and subsequently they didn't venture into the genre again until the splendid Avengers Grimm (2015), after which they've made one a year, with the aforementioned Sinister Squad and King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, and last year's Avengers Grimm: Time Wars. If I'd known that The Asylum was making a mockbuster based on Joker* I would have been intrigued and looking forward to it, but first impressions upon watching the trailer are not only that it disappointingly seems to be just a backwoods slasher flick, but it's pretty much indistinguishable from all the other recent low budget psycho clown movies out there. * The Asylum really need to improve their on-line presence. The trailer for Clown suddenly appeared on their YouTube channel a week ago, but - at the time of writing - Clown's existence hasn't even been mentioned on either their Facebook page or official website. Another recent Asylum movie, D Day: Dog Company, also hasn't appeared on their Facebook page, website or YouTube channel, despite the fact it was released on DVD in the UK over a month ago.

Curious. The trailer for Clown has vanished from The Asylum's YouTube channel, and I've searched on YouTube but been unable to find it. Regardless, at the time of writing the link to the trailer on my previous post (above) is still working.

The Asylum have announced their mockbuster of Jumanji: The Next Level. Entitled The Final Level: Escaping Rancala, it will be available on streaming services in America on 10th December ( Jumanji: The Next Level is currently due to be released on 13th December) and the cast includes Bai Ling, Emily Sweet, Jessica Chancellor and Anthony C. Ferrante. Here's the official synopsis: When an arcade manager realizes her brother has been transported into a dangerous video game, she and her two best friends follow him into the virtual world, battling dangerous creatures and a warlord who will stop at nothing to keep them in the game and make them part of his army. newsite.theasylum.cc/index.php/titles/detail?id=0b1a91da-d128-e911-a983-0edcbcd33718Say what you like about The Asylum, they do seem to excel at producing genre/action movies with team of heroines - see Mercenaries (2014) and the Avengers Grimm series - and judging by the poster art, The Final Level: Escaping Rancala is another example. Consider me intrigued.

Coming soon from The Asylum - Battle Star Wars!! Here's the official synopsis: When the leader of the evil Coalition threatens to destroy a Rebel planet for its resources, his daughter will have no choice but to join the Rebel side and fight for what is right.
Initial thoughts: (1.) Surely the House of Mouse's legal department won't let them get away with this? (2.) It's actually surprising The Asylum haven't done a Star Wars mockbuster until now. Which actually leads us to (3.), I wonder if they're now producing mockbusters of certain films because they think it's expected of them?
Anyway, I'll give Battle Star Wars a try when it's released next year. An encouraging sign is that it's being written by Jeremy M. Inman, who previously scripted all three entries in The Asylum's noteworthy Avengers Grimm series (and directed the first two).

The next upcoming mockbuster from The Asylum is Monster Island, their take on Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Godzilla: King of the Monsters may have disappointed at the box office (undeservedly, in my opinion) but presumably The Asylum's tie-in Monster Island must have done good business, as they've announced their take on Godzilla vs Kong which switches the top billing & will be titled Ape vs Monster. Here's the official synopsis (which makes it sound more like a mockbuster of Rampage): An ape lost in space crash-lands, oozing a sludge that makes him and a passing scorpion gigantic, leading to all out brawl for Earth.www.thefilmcatalogue.com/films/ape-vs-monster
