For Thelma it felt like everything spun to a halt, almost as if time stood still for a second. She remembered Sariel's last words to her, she was the one who would have to make the sacrifice, again. Her love for Cassie would bring everything full circle.
She couldn't let this fight between Cassie and Azazeal go on, either way Cassie would lose. Even if she managed to stab Azazeal it wouldn't finish things, he wouldn't be gone, he'd just lie dormant again for the next time and Cassie would never be rid of him.
She suddenly had a moment of clarity. It was time to end it. From the very beginning to the very end she had been there for Cassie and she wasn't going to let her lose this last chance at a real life. Even if that real life didn't include Thelma.
Pushing up from the floor where she had crouched she slipped in between Cassie and Azazeal, shoving him backwards. At the same moment Cassie lunged forward with the knife, too far through the swing to halt it.
The shock hit Cassie like a sledgehammer as instead of passing through the ghost, the knife slammed in to her back. The jolt from the impact ran up Cassie's arm. She could hear someone screaming and dimly realised it was herself.
As Thelma collapsed to the ground, so did Azazeal clutching at his chest and writhing, his monsterous visage now appearing.
"Daddy dearest!" Michael's clear cold voice rang through the room which suddenly became eerily quiet. Michael held the Canare above his head in both hands. Azazeal snarled in fury. "I'm afraid I've had an accident." He released his hands and the canare crashed to the floor, shattering in to a thousand pieces.
Azazeal let out a bone chilling howl, it was joined by keening and screaming that echoed through the tunnels from the other Nephilim. Dark smoke whipped in to the room and around it, flowing in to Azazeal's nostrils and mouth, turning his eyes black. His skin began to spilt and glowed like embers and then with a last dreadful scream he errupted in to a bright flame that blinded Cassies eyes.
When the spots cleared he was gone.
Cassie sat in disbelief. It was over. Then she remembered. "Thelma!"
