As the BBC four-part adaptation of Emma was originally screened in 2009, it's depressing to think that this means it's been four years since Laura Pyper last had a major, high profile role, and although she's subsequently kept active, it's been in minor theatre roles, bit parts in production-line TV shows, and radio/voice work. I remain hopeful that she'll get the big breakthrough role that she deserves.
With hindsight, Hex must have quite a daunting gig for Laura. Joining an established show is often off-putting for an actor - the cast and crew already know and are familiar with each other, and you're the newbie. And in Laura's case it was even harder, because she was the series' new lead, thrown straight onto centre-stage with the revamped show's future resting on her shoulders. Plus she was replacing a character who was immensely popular with the pre-existing fanbase (look at the Hex fanfic elsewhere on the 'net, and the show's message board on the IMDB: even now, the content is nearly all about either Cassie/Azazeal or Cassie/Thelma). But in my humble opinion, Laura thrived under the pressure and the weight of expectation. She was - quite simply - brilliant as Ella Dee, and helped take Hex to new heights. The second season had it's weaknesses, but she wasn't one of them.

She'd be a perfect Lucy Black, were anyone to turn Little Girl Lost, and whatever novels follow it, into a prime time detective drama. No doubt there'd be higher-profile candidates in the running--but it's hard to imagine anyone else in the role, especially after the reading of The Sacrifice.

Laura Pyper is one of the guest stars in the new series of Luther, which starts tomorrow night on BBC One. She's in episode two, playing Jodie. Another wonderfully natural performance from Laura in Episode #3.2 of Luther. When she first appeared in her role as a nurse in a retirement care-home, I thought it would be a minor part, with just one or two scenes and an equal number of lines to match. Instead her character Jodie actually became the focus of the second half of the episode, as she and her two housemates were targeted by the 'fetish killer' who was the principal villain of this opening two-parter. So although it was another Victim role for Laura, it was a notably visible appearance in a high profile and well publicized TV show that's popular on both sides of the Atlantic. Casting agents/directors, take note!

Laura Pyper is the reader of The Sacrifice by Brian McGilloway, the first instalment of Maiden City Stories: three short stories commissioned to mark Derry/Londonderry being awarded the inaugural UK City of Culture award. It airs on Radio 4 this Friday (08/03/13) at 3.45pm. You can get a free copy of The Sacrifice (the text of the story, that is, not Laura's reading of it; though that is available to buy) by entering the Brian McGilloway competition at C&R Crime: www.crcrime.co.uk/competitions-and-giveawaysThe same sampler will also be available at Amazon, but it's not currently scheduled for release until 01/09/13.

The Twitter feed for forthcoming British gangster thriller Isle of Dogs, starring Edward Hogg ( White Lightnin') and Barbara Nedeljáková ( Hostel), reports that Laura Pyper has joined the cast to play 'feisty housekeeper' Kelly. Isle of Dogs is being released on DVD on 27th January in the UK, and 21st January stateside. It's been a long time coming...which is very much for the best, according to this article on the US DVD release. 'Nearly laughed out of the cinema' in its original form? Ouch.
