I really liked the tribute that Bono paid to Cash when he died;
"Every man in the world knows that he's a cissy compared to Johnny Cash."

Back to the lyrics;
And when he lied, it meant he loved me. And when he lied, it meant he cared. And when he lied, it meant he loved me. 'cause when he lied it meant that He was there.
Jack Off Jill - 'Velveteen'

Ive got two songs that I could listen to all day on a loop, and never tire of them ...... Guns in The Ghetto ~ UB40
Daddy don't go out tonight Just stay home till morning light Me and mamma don't feel right Please hold us tight
Daddy why did you go to work When you know just how much we love you so Please come back tomorrow
[Chorus:] They're giving out guns in the ghetto They're saying they will set you free One day I'll have children of my own But I'm afraid they won't have me
Mamma, is Daddy home Why are you crying all alone Grandma's tears have turned to stone And I'm all alone
Mamma isn't daddy back I'm getting scared and that's a fact Why are we all dressed like that All in black
[Chorus]
Daddy don't go out tonight Please stay home till morning light Me and mamma don't feel right Please hold us tight
Daddy why did you go to work When you know just how much we love you so Please come back tomorrow
[Chorus]
Mamma, is Daddy home Why are you crying all alone Grandma's tears have turned to stone And I'm chilled to the bone
Mamma isn't daddy back I'm getting scared and that's a fact Why are we all dressed like that All in black
[Chorus 4x]

No-One But You (Only The Good Die Young) ~ Queen
A hand above the water An angel reaching for the sky Is it raining in heaven - Do you want us to cry?
And everywhere the broken-hearted On every lonely avenue No-one could reach them No-one but you
One by one Only the good die young They're only flying too close to the sun And life goes on - Without you...
Another tricky situation A get to drowin' in the blues And i find myself thinkin' Well - what would you do?
Yes! - it was such an operation Forever paying every due Hell, you made a sensation You found a way through - and
One by one Only the good die young They're only flyin' too close to the sun We'll remember - Forever...
And now the party must be over I guess we'll never understand The sense of your leaving Was it the way it was planned?
And so we grace another table And raise our glasses one more time There's a face at the window And i ain't never, never sayin' goodbye...
One by one Only the good die young They're only flyin' too close to the sun Cryin' for nothing Cryin' for no-one No-one but you Both songs have very special meanings to me .....

I was a huge fan of techno/dance/pop outfit Republica (scary to think it's been ten years since their chart heyday) and a recurring theme in their lyrics was a rage against the soul-sapping, repetitive existence of being a lonely, urban wage-slave. Here's a short, stark example - just two lines from their song 'Out of the Darkness', which I consider to be a work of simplistic, pared-down genius;
Poor cow, sits alone Pubs close, go home.

Josie Long is one of those comedians whom I'd heard of, but had never actually seen perform. It seems the only way that comics get to regularly be on television these days is by appearing on panel shows, and she doesn't seem interested in going down that route. However, I finally saw Miss Long doing stand-up last week on Dave's One Night Stand (on Dave, naturally), and she concluded her act by singing this short song that she'd composed herself (I'm quoting the lyrics from memory, so they may not be 100% accurate);
"One of them is enjoying it, The other is not.
One of them is enjoying it, The other prays for death.
One of them is enjoying it, The other is only going along with it 'cause he's a twin.
Jedward."
